Go here for an excellent windows-based timecode calculator. This isn't exactly a replacement for the built in Avid Calculator - more of an enhancement; but very useful nonetheless. I've been using the Palm version of this for a while now and I'm glad to see a Windows version.

Standalone Timecode Calulator for Windows
Great After Effects Tutorial
Software: Avid
Platform: All
Skill Level: All
Almost any editor using Avid will have heard of Adobe's outstanding compositing and effects package After Effects. I use this software daily for tasks that simply are too difficult to achieve inside Avid itself. After Effects has one of the most well-sorted interfaces I've ever used (how I wish Avid keyframes were as flexible) and very tight integration with its' stablemates Photoshop and Illustrator.
I recently decided to upgrade my skills and purchased a two CD training pack - Adobe After Effects 5/5.5 Essentials Tutorials, created by Jayse Hansen. I've only had a chance to go through about 1.5 hours of the 9.5 hours of material so far - but even this small start justifies the purchase price ($149.95 AUD).
For anybody who wants to learn more about After Effects - I would highly recommend this training set. The lessons are presented as narrated Quicktime movies and the examples that Jayse uses can be applied to many common editing and effects situations.
